The A.D. White Library, in Cornell University, may be the model for all dream libraries. Three stories high, it traverses the campus like a huge spider web, crisscrossed by multistory walkways decorated here and there with recessed curling wrought iron balconies of books and stacked bookcases on each floor. Inside, there is a staggering 2.5 million square feet of space dedicated to the expanding human mind, ready for research and learning.

Functions of The Library on Campus

The library is at the heart of all college life; one of its many functions is to provide an easy location for students to obtain research-grade books for their studies. This is an important function, and Cornell's A.D. White Library is designed to meet this need. It features three stories, many of which open onto glass walkway-like levels. Each level has at least one public computer and a number of study spaces.

Visitors to the A.D. White Library will find that its three stories and two floors have been divided into smaller sections, featuring study and research centers. The lower level, which houses the lower level of the library, is separated into two parts: the media and reading areas, and the business center, with meeting and conference rooms on the upper levels. The library also has an enormous mechanical reading room, complete with plush leather couches, coffee vending machines, and a giant screen of Jumbo-sized newsprint.

Correct Placement of Bookshelves

The Reading Room The main focus of the reading room is the tower of text that rises from the center of the room. On almost every floor, there is a large central bookcase, rich in brass and stained glass. Here you can choose from an eclectic selection of fiction, non-fiction to graphic novels, religious and devotional materials, and cookery and self-help books. Children's materials are also available. For those who prefer it, the library offers a cafe that offers sandwiches, baked goods, hot chocolate, cappuccino, and other delicious specialty items.

The Administration and Finance Center feature a single, wide-screen LCD wall calendar on its first floor. The library also offers filing cabinets, which are located in the basement, along with a high speed Internet connection. There are four computers in the Administration and Finance Center, which have Internet connections.

Creating a Playroom in The Library Basement

The Children's Room Children's play space is located in the basement of the library. In the children's room, visitors will find interactive play furniture, educational games, music centers, study areas for coloring and painting, as well as libraries featuring board games, puzzles, storybooks, and CD collections. This area is also meant to serve as a venue for school activities.

The Executive Meeting Room The third floor of the library features an executive meeting room for the senior management team. Here, visitors can watch a live video feed from conference rooms, which feature web cams. The library also hosts several workshops and seminars, as well as lectures by guest speakers. To further enhance its socializing skills, the library has a cafeteria, which serves a wide variety of foods, while providing convenient snacks for visitors.

The White Library Building is just one part of the massive renovation plan for the downtown area. The project includes three large mixed-use buildings that will offer retail, office space, restaurants, bars, condos, and a variety of other facilities for all ages. In addition to the library, the downtown area is being revitalized with numerous other mixed-use facilities including an LRT station, a major league soccer stadium, a hotel, and other public facilities. The renovation plan for the downtown area will continue to add to the growing economic vitality of the White River State Park.
